PEWARTA.CO.ID – YouTube, the world-renowned video-sharing platform, introduced a new subscription package called Premium Lite last year. This package is aimed at users seeking a more affordable alternative to the standard YouTube Premium subscription.
Currently, the US-based company is expanding the reach of Premium Lite by conducting trials in three countries: Australia, Germany, and Thailand.
According to a report by The Verge on Friday (October 17, 2024), YouTube spokesperson Jessica Gibby mentioned that the trial will take place over the next few months in these three countries.
Australia is the first country to experience the YouTube Premium Lite service. This was also confirmed by Australian musician and songwriter Jonah Manzano. Through his Threads account, he shared a screenshot showing the Premium Lite package.
The subscription cost through the website is 8.99 AUD (around Rp93,000), which is half the price of the standard Premium subscription at 16.99 AUD (around Rp176,000).
However, there is a price difference when subscribing through iOS devices. For Premium Lite, the cost is 11.99 AUD (around Rp124,000), while the standard Premium package is priced at 22.99 AUD (around Rp238,000).
The main difference between the two packages lies in the presence of ads. The standard Premium package ensures that users will not see ads on the content they watch, including regular videos, music, and Shorts.
On the other hand, Premium Lite still shows limited ads on certain content types, such as music videos and Shorts. However, videos specifically searched for by users through the search bar are guaranteed to be ad-free.
Manzano also highlighted some drawbacks of Premium Lite. This package does not include free access to YouTube Music, the ability to download videos for offline viewing, or the feature to play video audio when the phone screen is turned off.
Key features and differences
Price: The Premium Lite package is priced lower than the standard Premium package. For instance, the web subscription in Australia is 8.99 AUD, compared to 16.99 AUD for the full Premium. However, prices are slightly higher for iOS users.
Ads: Premium Lite users will still see limited ads, mainly on music videos and Shorts. However, content specifically searched through YouTube's search function will remain ad-free.
Additional Features: Unlike the full Premium package, Premium Lite does not offer access to YouTube Music, offline video downloads, or the ability to play audio with the phone's screen turned off.
