PEWARTA.CO.ID - The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) is set to emphasize five main industrial sectors under the leadership of Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka from 2025 to 2029. These sectors are poised to drive significant industrial growth and form the backbone of Indonesia's economic development.

The prioritized sectors include the natural resource-based industry, service industries, skilled labor-intensive sectors, basic industries, and technology-driven innovation industries.

Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, Deputy for Economic Affairs at Bappenas, highlighted the need for focus during a national seminar organized by the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Indonesia.

"In the next five years, we will promote focused industrialization. We tend to prioritize because if we are not selective we cannot produce focused policies," she emphasized.

Widyasanti further explained that targeted interventions would allow the government to produce clearer and more effective strategies.

"By doing so, we can produce government interventions with clearer targets," she noted.

Key natural resource-based industries

In the natural resource sector, the focus will be on agro, mining, and marine resources. Bappenas will prioritize palm oil and coconut commodities within the agro-industries.

"In the future, it will not only be exports of crude palm oil, but also palm oil derivative products. We have also prepared a master plan for coconuts, as coconut production in Indonesia is extraordinary," Widyasanti said.

For mining, the emphasis will expand beyond nickel to include copper, bauxite, and tin, aligning with the government's downstreaming strategy. In the marine sector, seaweed production is a key area of focus.

“We are the second-largest producer after China, but what we export is raw seaweed, not processed. In fact, seaweed can create higher added value,” she explained.

Skilled labor and basic industries

In the skilled labor-intensive industries, sectors like food and beverages, textiles and textile products, and footwear will receive attention. Bappenas also aims to bolster basic industries by targeting chemicals and base metals.

Technology-intensive innovation industry

The plan extends to technology-driven sectors, which are set to become a cornerstone of Indonesia's future industrial strategy. These include cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, machinery, and battery-based electric vehicles, as well as aerospace industries.

“We are an archipelagic country, we must have domestic air transportation. We want to create a local supply chain. So, the islands must become integrated economic areas. That way, Indonesia can have good and large economic strength,” Widyasanti stated.

Asta Cita program and downstreaming

These industrialization and downstreaming efforts, which are aimed at adding value to domestic products, fall under the broader Asta Cita program, a government initiative championed by President-elect Prabowo and Vice President-elect Gibran.

By focusing on these sectors, Bappenas hopes to strengthen Indonesia’s economy, enhance its global competitiveness, and ensure sustainable growth over the coming years.
