PEWARTA.CO.ID - Members of the Indonesian Parliament (DPR RI) for the 2024-2029 term who already own private homes in Jakarta will continue to receive a housing allowance. This decision follows a policy change that renders the DPR's official housing for representatives no longer available for use by these public officials.

Indra Iskandar, the Secretary General of the DPR RI, clarified that all members of the parliament are entitled to equal rights and obligations under the law, including the right to a housing allowance, which will be provided along with their monthly salary.

"Everyone is treated equally, so everyone gets the same replacement for their residence, except for the DPR leadership because they have already been provided with official housing by the State Secretariat," Indra said during a visit to the DPR RI Housing Complex (RJA) in Kalibata, Jakarta, on Monday (October 7, 2024).

However, Indra noted that the amount of the housing allowance has yet to be determined. The DPR is currently conducting a survey in collaboration with an appraisal team to set an appropriate value.

"We are not looking for the highest or lowest figure. What we want is something realistic, something that allows these residences to also serve as a workspace for the representatives for the next five years," Indra stated.

The survey aims to ensure that the housing allowance aligns with the needs of the members of parliament for their official residency. The decision is intended to offer a fair and practical solution for the members of the DPR RI as they serve their five-year terms.

Meanwhile, some homes in the DPR's Kalibata housing complex are still occupied by members who have not yet vacated the premises. Indra said that the members have until the end of October 2024 to vacate the official residences.

This grace period is being provided to give re-elected members of parliament for the 2024-2029 term enough time to find new housing. Indra also mentioned that assistance will be available to members who require help in relocating their belongings.

The official announcement regarding the replacement of official housing with a housing allowance was made by the DPR RI on Thursday, October 3, 2024. The announcement was delivered through a letter from the DPR RI Secretariat General, numbered B/733/RT.01/09/2024, which ordered the return of the official residences.

The letter, signed on September 25, 2024, instructed all members of parliament, whether re-elected or not, to vacate the official residences they were occupying. The deadline for vacating the housing complex is set for the end of October 2024.
