Prabowo Urges Indonesians to Preserve Unity and Harmony at Demokrat Anniversary

PEWARTA.CO.ID — President Prabowo Subianto has called on Indonesians to preserve unity and harmony while embracing differences as an essential part of democratic life.

Prabowo delivered the message during the main celebration of the Demokrat's 25th anniversary at Indonesia Arena in Jakarta on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026.

The president said differences in political views should not undermine the sense of togetherness that binds Indonesians as one nation.

Prabowo highlights the role of criticism in democracy

Prabowo said a large nation that has chosen democracy must be willing to accept criticism, corrections and differing opinions.

He emphasized that such differences remain constructive when they are driven by a shared commitment to serving the public interest.

“A great nation that has chosen the path of democracy must be grateful for criticism and correction,” Prabowo said.

The president also viewed Indonesia's democratic development as evidence of growing political maturity. Competition and different choices, he said, can coexist with friendship, family ties and social harmony.

“There are many colors, competition, criticism, suggestions, recommendations, and things that may be uncomfortable to say, but we remain harmonious, remain friends, and remain a family. This is what we must hold on to,” he said.

Indonesia faces major challenges

Prabowo noted that Indonesia's size means the country must deal with challenges on a large scale.

He pointed to the scope of public services, including the need to serve hundreds of thousands of schools extending into mountainous areas and remote islands.

“Our problems are indeed big, our challenges are big, and we also live in an environment with many challenges. But thankfully, at the age of 81, our nation is strong and united. We are different, but we are strong, united, and becoming stronger in facing the future,” Prabowo said.

Despite those challenges, Prabowo expressed confidence in Indonesia's long-term prospects. He referred to international projections that place Indonesia among the world's largest economic powers in the future.

Prabowo points to the younger generation

Prabowo said Indonesia must prepare for that potential from now, particularly as today's younger generation will eventually assume responsibility for advancing the country.

He described himself and former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, or SBY, as part of a generation that is helping create a foundation for younger Indonesians to continue the nation's progress.

“Pak SBY and I, our generation is like a staircase that will be used by the younger generation to rise, take over the responsibility, and continue the revival of Indonesia,” Prabowo said.

Prabowo ultimately urged all elements of society to maintain national unity, strengthen democracy and work together in addressing development challenges.

He said a strong foundation of togetherness would provide Indonesia with important capital to continue moving forward.
