MALANG, PEWARTA – The Malang City Public Works, Spatial Planning, Housing, and Residential Area Office (DPUPRPKP) is set to take immediate action to repair the collapsed section of Muharto Street in Kedungkandang District, Malang, which occurred on Monday (21/10/2024).
As an initial step, DPUPRPKP deployed a mini excavator and mobilized a team of workers to start fixing the damaged road.
Additionally, the area where the collapse happened has been cordoned off with safety lines to ensure the protection of road users.
Head of the DPUPRPKP Malang, Dandung Djulharjanto, explained that the road collapse was caused by an old drainage channel underneath the road, which could no longer bear the load.
"The part that collapsed wasn't the road itself, but the drainage channel. The drainage has aged, you could say it's worn out," he told TribunJatim.com.
Dandung further elaborated that the old drainage system was constructed with 80-centimeter diameter concrete pipes, with a thickness of 8 centimeters.
"The old drainage pipes didn't have any reinforcement, they were just cast concrete. And since this is an old drainage system, it's likely no longer strong enough to handle the load of vehicles passing over it, especially considering it’s around 20 years old," he explained.
He also noted that immediate repair measures are underway and would be carried out promptly.
"The collapsed section is about 7 meters long. However, we won’t only repair the 7 meters; instead, we will extend the repair to about 15 meters and dig down 2 meters for reinforcement. Along this stretch, we will also replace the old drainage with a 1x1 meter box culvert," Dandung shared.
He added that the repairs would be funded using an emergency budget.
"For the repairs, we will use an emergency budget. As for the exact amount, it's still uncertain as it will depend on the actual needs," he concluded.
