Prabowo Orders BRI and BSI to Prepare Bank Accounts for All Indonesians

PEWARTA.CO.ID — President Prabowo Subianto has instructed Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) and Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) to prepare bank accounts for Indonesian citizens as the government seeks to further expand financial inclusion and literacy.

The request was conveyed by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto after a limited meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday, September 7, 2026.

“Earlier, the President asked that Indonesia’s population have bank accounts. Therefore, BRI and Bank Syariah Indonesia were asked to prepare accounts for the public,” Airlangga said.

Population data to be linked with payment systems

Airlangga said the government plans to use population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration, known as Dukcapil, as part of the preparation.

The data will subsequently be matched with systems operated by Bank Indonesia, particularly those related to payment infrastructure and gateways.

The government also plans to use the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) as part of the system, according to Airlangga.

The accounts are expected to serve a broader purpose beyond basic banking access.

In the future, various government programs are expected to be distributed through the accounts prepared for Indonesian citizens, although Airlangga did not specify which programs would use the system.

Government targets stronger financial inclusion

Airlangga said the initiative is intended to help Indonesia maximize financial inclusion and improve financial literacy among the population.

The government had previously discussed bank account ownership as well as national levels of financial inclusion and literacy.

According to figures from a survey or census by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Statistics Indonesia (BPS) cited by Airlangga, Indonesia’s financial inclusion rate has reached 93.62%.

Meanwhile, the country’s financial literacy rate stands at 69.57%.

Airlangga described the figures as relatively strong when compared with the OECD benchmark for financial literacy, which he said stands at 63%.

“Actually, these figures are relatively good. For example, compared with the OECD, the OECD standard for financial literacy is 63%, while our survey recorded 69.57%,” he said.
